HIGHLIGHTS

1. BHEL developed a number of products, in their Research and Development Division, major amongst them being:

a) 207 KW Traction Motor, which will provide higher loading at a speed of 105 Km/hr. in 25 KV single phase Broad Gauge AC EMUs operating in Calcutta, Delhi and Chennai Suburban Railways.

b) Developed a state of the art device called "spark-gap" for installation in the country's highest rating transmission system of 400 KV, with 100% indigenous equipment.

c) A system for accurate loading of petrol fuel in wagons and trucks to check large scale pilferage and wastage.

2. BHEL received a number of important orders during the year. These included orders for:

(i) Setting up a 430 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant at Faridabad amidst severe international competition.

(ii) 250 MW Ghatghar Hydro Electric Project in Maharashtra in association with Nissho Iwai Corporation and Fuji Electric.

(iii) Manufacture of 2 Nos. Hydrogen Recycle gas centrifugal compressous for Diesel Hydro Desulphurisation (DHDS) plants - a pollution reducing plant of Cochin Refineries Ltd. (CRL), Cochin and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPC), Visakhapatnam.

(iv) Setting up on turnkey basis the country's largest rated (16 MW each) diesel power plant at Kozhikode awarded by Kerala State Electricity Board.

(v) Supply of generating equipment to TATA Electric Company (TEC) for 240 MW Thermal Power Plant at Jobobera (Bihar).

(vi) 32.5 MW Combined Cycle Gas Based Power Plant at Karaikal in Pondicherry Power Corporation Ltd. (PPCL).

(vii) Renovating and uprating capacity by nearly 17% for two immported Hydro sets from Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).

(viii) Order for 22 MW ADB funded Steam Turbo Generator (STG) set , entailing generation of power from Bagasse-a non-conventional energy source.

(ix) Supply of 10 Nos. 6.6 KW A/C motors in 150 to 1500 KW capacity range for a Fertilizer project at Paradeep, Orissa against stiff competition from leading Indian and multi-national companies.

(x) Pulverised fuel-fired steam generator of 200 tonnes per hour capacity from National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO) for their Mines and Alumina Refinery Complex at Damanjodi in Orissa.

  1. Refurbishing of Electrics of an imported Blast Furnace and a raw material handling system from Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. (NITL), Bhubaneswar, a joint venture company promoted by MMTC & Government of Orissa.
  2. Supply of 12 Nos. Traction Equipment for 3-phase dual voltage (AC & DC) EMUs from Western Railways, against stiff competition from European and Japanese MNCs.
  3. Setting up of NTPC’s 1000 MW thermal power project at Simhadri (AP) under International Competitive Bidding (ICB). This is the first turnkey order on BHEL for 500 MW capacity thermal sets which is funded by the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (OECF).
  4. Renovation and modernisation of 3 units of 35 MW each for Jhelum Hydro Power Station, J&K. With this renovation work, repair downtime will be reduced by 3 moths every year.

(i) Bharat Heavy Plate & vessels (BHPV), Visakhapatnam, received an order worth Rs. 100 crore from HPCL for design, manufacture and supply of critical equipment's such as CDU, VDU, Heater, CAD columns, CS columns, CS/AIR fine coolers, Heat Exchangers, etc. The Company was also awarded an order of Rs. 9.6 crore for supply of a High Purity Nitrogen (HPN) Plant from Technimont, SPA, through Technimont ICB Ltd., Mumbai for IOCL, Haldia Refinery.

  1. They have also received an order for design, manufacture and supply of LT co-converter for the 1350 MTP Ammonia Expansion Plant of NFCL, Kakinada: an order valued at Rs. 10.49 crore for the revamping of 1350 NM3/Hr capacity HPN Plant for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. for their refinery at Mumbai: another order of Rs. 18.6 crore from Oswal Engineering and Project for design, manufacture and supply of 4 Nos. Waste heat recovery Low pressure steam boiler and 4 Nos. feed water heaters with associated piping structures and instrumentation for Oswal Chemical and Fertilizer Ltd. for their Phosphate Fertilizer project being set up at Paradeep, Orissa.
  2. The Company also bagged amidst stiff competition, a prestigious order for Rs. 19 crore from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), Visakhapatnam for supply of one CO-Boiler, and an order from M/s Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea for supply High Purity Desulfurisation (DHDS) projects of HPCL, Mumbai.

  1. Bridge & Roof Company Ltd. (B&R) secured an order from Public Words Department, West Bengal for construction of a part of the Durgapur Calcutta Expressway (Dankuni end) valued at Rs. 24.24 crore.
  2. Reliance Petroleum placed orders worth Rs. 75 crore on B&R for civil work, piping work/fabrication, erection of structural for their project at Jamnagar.
  3. The Company also received orders from NALCO for civil works for Package 1 at a value of Rs. 12.19 crore and civil construction work for NALCO expansion at a value of Rs. 10 crore.
  4. They also secured an order valued at Rs. 10.25 crore for construction of civil, structural and under ground piping work of Urea Plant for Phulpur Expansion Project, IFFCO and an order of Rs. 15 crore from Reliance Petroleum, Jamnagar, for piping and equipment installation.

  1. Tungbhadra Steel Products Ltd. (TSP), Hospet received an order for Rs. 16.61 crore for fabrication, supply and erection of 62 Nos. of Radial Gates and Rope Drum Hoists for Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Andhra Pradesh.

  1. Engineering Projects (India) Ltd. (EPIL) secured two projects, worth Rs. 32.92 crore for Modification/Upgradation of Group Gathering Station cum CTF at North Santhal & South Santhal in Mehsana, Gujrat from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Construction of Distt. Administrative Complex Phase-II Jalandhar. They have also secured an order of Rs. 11.31 crore for construction of State Bank of India Building at Patna.
  2. The company also secured orders worth Rs. 14.87 crore for the Nasik Water Supply Scheme (Phase-I) and an order of Rs. 12.45 crore for supply of equipments/technological structure and commissioning of Lime Calcination Plant for Neelanchal Ispat Nigam, Orissa.

 

7. Richardson & cruddas (R&C) has secured an order from Balmer Lawrie for civil and structural work for their Container Freight Station (CFS) at Uran, Maharashtra at a total value of Rs. 4.9 crore. The Company also received an order of Rs.5.22 crore from Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) for design, manufacture and supply of LPG Bullets for its LPG plant at Lakwa, Assam. The Company has been engaged by Steel Tube India Ltd., Guna, Madhya Pradesh for setting up Railway Siding facilities at a cost of Rs.8.41 crore. The Company has also booked an order of Rs.9.62 crore for manufacture and supply of 87 Nos. BTPN Wagons from Railway Board.

8. An MOU between Andrew Yule & Co. Ltd. (AYCL) and M/s Phoenix A.G. Germany formation of JV in respect of Belting Division of the Company was signed.

9. Shri B.L .Chouksey, an Artisan from BHEL’s Bhopal plant has been awarded Prime Minister’s Shram Bhushan Award for the year 1997 for development of unique devices which have reduced manufacturing cycle time by 50%. This award has been received by a BHEL employees for the 13th Year in succession.
