PROGRESSIVE USE OF HINDI

In order to promote the use of Hindi in the Official work of the Department, the main thrust has been to make efforts for its development during the period under review. The Official Language Implementation Committee held its periodical meetings regularly to review the progress made in the use of Hindi and suggested ways and means to remove the obstacles in the implementation of provisions of the Official Language Act, 1963 and the rules made thereunder.

Parliamentary Committee on Official Language visited National Industrial Development Corporation, New Delhi during the year and valuable suggestions were advanced by the Hon'ble Members. The officers of the Deptt. made inspections of some undertakings during the year to monitor the progress made in the use of Hindi and their Chief Executives were apprised of the Official Language Policy of the Government.

It was observed during the inspection that all the Notifications, Resolutions, Notes and Circulars, General Orders, Cabinet Notes, Parliamentary questions, Annual Report, Budget performance and papers laid on the tables of both Houses of the Parliament were issued in Hindi and in English. It was also observed that all the letters received in Hindi were responded to in Hindi. "Hindi Pakhwara" was celebrated in the month of September, 1998 during which several competitions including Hindi noting/drafting, Essay writing, Typing and Shorthand etc. were conducted. The workshops relating to Hindi were also organised during the "Hindi Pakhwara/Hindi week". Cash awards were given to excellent candidates.

Public Sector Enterprises under the administrative control of the Department also continued to make whole-hearted efforts to implement the Official Language Act and its provisions. Various Seminars, competition and workshop were organised to propagate the use of Hindi in some of the PSEs. 'Hindi Pakhwara'/'Hindi Week' was celebrated in most of the enterprises.
