PROGRESSIVE USE OF HINDI
In order to promote the use of Hindi in the official work of the Department, efforts continued during the period under review. The Official Language Implementation Committee held its periodical meetings regularly to review the progress made in the use of Hindi and suggested ways to remove the impediments in the implementation of provisions of the Official Language Act, 1963 and the rules made thereunder.
Parliamentary Committee on Official Language visited Praga Tools Ltd., Hyderabad and the Units of BHEL situated at Chennai and made valuable suggestions. The officers of the Deptt. made official language inspection of some enterprises during the year to monitor the progress made in the use of Hindi and their Chief Executives were apprised of the Official Language Policy of the Government.
All the Notifications, Resolutions, Notes and Circulars and papers laid on the tables of both Houses of the Parliament were issued in Hindi and in English. All the letters received in Hindi were responded to in Hindi. "Hindi Pakhwara" was celebrated in the month of September, 1999 during which several competitions including Hindi noting/drafting, Essay writing and Paragraph writing were conducted. The staff of the Deptt. participated in these activities with great interest. Cash awards were given to good candidates. Workshop was organized for officers/employees of DHI to impart training in noting/drafting in Hindi. They were also apprised of the Official Language Act, 1963. The period from 14th September 1999 to 14th September 2000 is being celebrated as a golden jubilee of the Official Language.
Public Sector Enterprises under the administrative control of the Department also continued to make whole-hearted efforts to implement the Official Language Act and its provisions. Various Seminars, competitions and workshops were organized in these PSEs to propagate the use of Hindi. "Hindi Pakhwara" / "Hindi Week" was celebrated in the PSEs. They are also organizing various programmes to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Official Language.
